If you are like most men, the idea of surgery on your scrotum is, at best; worrisome, and at worst; terrifying. And this God-given emotional reaction is for good reason - a man's scrotum is among the most sensitive parts of his anatomy. Its smart to do the research necessary to find the least traumatic alternative available for permanent male contraception before making your decision to have a standard vasectomy.
You might have heard of no-scalpel vasectomy; a surgical technique that eliminates the need for a scalpel to enter the scrotum in order to access the vas deferens "vas" (sperm duct). However, even with "no-scalpel" technique, the surgeon will typically still be surgically severing the main link between your testicles and the rest of your body. Once the surgeon has cut the sperm duct in half and removed a segment, he will typically burn the ends of the stumps with a red-hot instrument and apply metal clips or sutures to close-off the ends. Some doctors will also sew one end of the vas inside, and the other end outside; the vasal sheath to further separate the two cut ends.
With No-Scissors-Vasectomy aka Pro-Vas Occlusion, your doctor leaves your sperm ducts intact and merely attaches a tiny spring clip to the vas that applies a gentle pressure, sufficient to close the lumen of the duct, and block the passage of sperm.
The No-Scissors approach using the Pro-Vas occlusion device reduces post-procedure pain and minimizes the risk for complications. The result is a much faster return to your normal activities.
